Your One-Hour Check-In That Changes Everything

The One-Hour Habit That Strengthens Your Team

Leaders spend their days in meetings with others yet rarely sit down for a proper meeting with themselves.

If you’re constantly in reaction mode, it’s time to change that.

Blocking one hour each week for focused reflection and planning helps you lead with more intention and show up better for your team.

It’s a simple habit that builds clarity, momentum and stronger leadership presence.

Why this habit matters for leadership ?

Effective leadership isn’t just about doing more. It’s about thinking better. A weekly self-check-in gives you space to pause, assess and adjust with purpose.

Use this hour to:

  • Reflect on team wins, challenges and shifting priorities
  • Reconnect with your leadership goals and approach
  • Plan with focus and reduce fire-fighting
  • Show up more grounded and consistent for your team

You don’t need a journal or a new tool. Just one quiet hour that’s protected in your calendar.

How to run your weekly leadership check-in?

Block one hour in your calendar. Choose the same time and day each week so it becomes a rhythm.

Structure your time into four simple parts:

1. Review the past week (15 mins)

Ask yourself:

  • What went well for the team
  • What felt unclear or off-track
  • How did I show up as a leader

Track the patterns that influence outcomes and team performance.

2. Check in with your mindset and energy (15 mins)

Ask:

  • Where did I lead with presence and clarity
  • Where did I feel distracted or drained
  • What influenced my energy and behaviour

This builds self-awareness so you can lead with intention.

3. Plan the week ahead (15 mins)

Think through:

  • What are the top three priorities for the team
  • Are there conversations I need to prepare for
  • What support do individuals need from me

This shifts you from reactive to proactive leadership.

4. Set one leadership action (15 mins)

Choose one small move that will elevate your leadership this week.

Examples:

  • Acknowledge someone’s effort or growth
  • Clarify expectations on an upcoming task
  • Create time for a high-value discussion

Small intentional actions make a visible difference.

What happens when leaders commit to this?

  • Leaders who adopt this habit often report:
  • Sharper focus and better decisions
  • Stronger team alignment and communication
  • Less reactivity and last-minute stress
  • More confidence in how they lead each week

When the leader is clear, the team gains clarity too.

Make it stick

  • Start with 30 minutes if an hour feels too much
  • Schedule it on Monday morning or Friday afternoon
  • Use the same questions each time to build rhythm
  • Pair it with something enjoyable like coffee or a walk

For example, a team lead blocks 8 a.m. every Monday to reflect, plan and prepare for key conversations. The result is fewer surprises and a more aligned team.

This habit costs nothing but delivers structure, clarity and control.  Block the hour. Protect the time. Reflect with intention.

Lead the way you want to, not just react to what comes your way.
